One of the first steps that can be taken to improve the handling characteristics of a Miata is the addition of a larger front sway bar and a set of performance lowering springs. Body roll occurs when one side of the Miata suspension is compressed (referred to as jounce ), while the other side extends (referred to as rebound ). The use of larger diameter Miata sway bars limits the body-roll of the Miata by making it harder for the driver-side and passenger-side suspensions to move in opposite directions.
Another method used to achieve less body roll is through the use of stiffer Miata suspension springs. A stiffer Racing Beat spring will compress less than the stock Miata spring when subjected to the equal amount of cornering force. These springs have been designed with a rate increase of approximately 30% (front - 157 lb/in) and 20% (rear - 106 lb/in) with a modest drop of .33-inch (front) and 1-inch (rear). Less compression on the outside edge of the Miata results in less body roll.
