Customer Reviews: Robbins Vinyl Tonneau Cover - Black with glass rear window 1990-1997
Robbins makes the best Miata tops in the industry. So what went wrong with this tonneau cover? Robbins used to make a superb tonneau, as good or better than every other piece of upholstery or stitched fabric on your car. That was twenty years ago.
The current tonneau product, in black vinyl, is accurately tailored with high quality fasteners to fit the studs on the dash and solid Tenax fasteners behind. The problem with with the current Robbin tonneau for the Miata is that the vinyl fabric which is used is far too thin to resist buffeting in the wind when the car is in motion.
With the driver's side open and the passenger's side covered configuration and at speeds above 50 miles per hour the surface of the tonneau is constantly in motion. There is so much flapping, the motion of the tonneau is not just an annoyance: the flapping is a hazard to solid concentration on driving the car.
I find myself disappointed that an industry leader like Robbins decided to cheapen a once solid product, to the point of making it more or less useless, in order to move a little more product for a short period of time. They are inconveniencing their customers and debasing their brand.
I am not sure what I will do with this replacement tonneau. I may have a local vendor rip the stitching apart in order to use the fabric panels for a pattern for a custom tonneau. The custom tonneau will look just like any other Robbins tonneau, however it will be made with vinyl fabric as heavy as the fine product which they once made.
