Wow this is some great info... thx Brian and everyone for doing the testing and letting us know what works! It looks like the Enkei RP03 17x8 with 235s is a good balance between looks and performance... no fender rolling required until I lower the car, I'd imagine?
What year Miata? Assuming factory 01-05 16x6.5 wheel, then yes, but it is a little too tall and the sidewalls won't have good support. A 225/40/16 would work better...on a 16x7 or wider.

On the NC the 225/45/16 is a fine choice. I have run 225/50/16s which are a little tall but nothing wrong with the 45 series in that size. But yes, the factory NC 16x6.5 wheel is a little too narrow. Even the 7 inch is a little narrow for the 225 and the taller 225/50/16 would work better out a 16x7.

Did some more playing with max tire sizes on our 2006 MX5 Miata...looking ahead to the day when we have a turbo or supercharger on the car. Used an Eastwood fender rolling tool to get a good roll on the rear lips and now the 275/35/18s on 18x9.5 Enkei RP-F1 off our RX8 just barely fit in the rear. The tire is still too tall to fit in the front (can't turn the wheels without hitting fender liner) but our latest results suggest that it might be possible to build a SM2 car using 285/30/18s on this same rim and with enough negative camber make it all fit....hmmm
