DESCRIPTION
AEM makes this great cold air intake for the Mazda MX5 Miata. Also sold by Mazda as the MazdaSpeed intake if you want to pay more for the exact same intake! The stock Miata airbox is restrictive by its design to allow use of an inexpensive and flat paper filter. The AEM intake achieves better breathing by using a much higher flowing velocity stack conical filter placed directly in the flow of cool air in the "mouth" of the Miata.Not only will this intake give your MX5 Miata much freer breathing and quicker acceleration, but also provide a nice deep growl at high revs. This is the same intake that MAZDA sells for all MX5s in the new Pro Spec racing series. This AEM 21-640P is NOW CARB CERTIFIED for 2006 through 2009, CARB EO Number D-670-15. If you have a 2009 and need a CARB certified intake, this is the one you get and see the install notes for 2009 below. If you have a 2009 and do not need CARB certification, look to the AEM intake listed for 2009-2015 which has a different elbow and easier fit.
Note that install on 2009 and beyond is commonly accomplished by using the upper factory elbow instead of the rubber elbow included with this kit (or you can do it the hard way and use the AEM elbow if buy a 90 degree pcv socket from 06-08 MX5, and Mazda bracket LFG1-18-835B).
Note: Installation requires removal of the front bumper.

This intake goes way beyond aesthetics, obviously. Installation took some time, but it paid off by giving notably quicker throttle response, and although not measured on a dyno, power seems appreciably increased.
I purchased this for my father and package was received quickly. It was also well packed and no damage in shipping. I was surprised at how light the intake is. I did have some concerns on whether the finish on the intake would flake off and eventually lose its shine, only time will tell on this one. But I am happy with the quality. The instructions are not complete from AEM. I mixed the instructions from another intake manufacturer with the AEM one to get a fairly complete idea on how to remove the bumper. Luckily the miata is small and light so working on it was very easy. It took up 2 1/2 hours to fully remove the bumper because we were cautious since it was our first time. Also took us a while because there were some nuts (2 on each side) holding the bumper in that were not on the instructions. I noticed this and removed them. Once we installed the intake it honestly took us no more than 40 min to put everything back together. It went back together flawlessly/fit and finish was factory perfect. A good sign the car was designed well IMO. There is a slight increase in engine noise in the cabin. We had this intake paired with the roadster sport exhaust kit. Car feels able and willing to rev up in any gear now. Feels fantastic, good increase in torque, and is just a joy to drive.
