DESCRIPTION

These MX5 Springs were chosen by Mazda for their limited edition 2007 MSR package that dominated the SCCA STOCK CLASS until ND came along. The engineering staff at Progress has decades of experience in the design and tuning of performance suspension systems, including CART/Indy Cars, IMSA, SCCA, NASA, and SCORE competitors. These MX5 springs reflect their ability to develop a successful blend of appearance, handling capability, and ride quality.

These MX5 springs feature increased spring rates for upgraded handling capabilities with reasonable rate upgrade to keep superior ride quality. These MX5 springs are designed to work with OEM shocks but will benefit from using high performance shocks such as our adjustable choices from Koni and Tokico. Progress specifies only certified high-tensile SAE spring wire materials. Their MX5 springs are cold-wound on modern CNC coiling machines, then stress relieved, pre-set, and shot-peened for maximum durability.

-Front starting drop: 0.5" --- Rear starting drop: 0.5"
-Front starting rate: 126 lbs/in --- Rear starting rate: 116 lbs/in
-All spring kits are powdercoated metallic gray.
-Drop amount varies by 0.25" depending and typically setup will settle a good quarter inch over time.

BRIAN'S APPLICATION NOTES: The drop figures are for 2006-2008. Note spring 'starting' rates, initial travel comfort very similar to stock but when you lean on them in the turns the progress design means much less squishy than stock for much flatter handling. These are a great choice for those who want to replace the soggy factory springs, improve handling, without dropping the car a lot. For those who want MORE DROP than the half inch drop the springs provide, combine these springs with our KONI SPORT to reproduce that factory MSR package handling and stance for total lowering of about an inch. Even customers with the PRHT have been very happy with this spring choice (shown below on PRHT in combination with KONI SHOCKS that lower another half inch or so. We suggest adding our FCM Sport or Comfort bumpstops depending on your driving intentions.

INSTALL NOTES: It is important to not lock down the bolts to the suspension after install while the car is suspended in the air with the suspension fully extended. Bounce it on the ground, then give it a drive around the block with the bolts just snug so you get it to settle before you torque everything ON THE GROUND. Most shops will NOT know to do this...PRINT ALL THIS PAGE FOR YOUR INSTALLER! See details in our forum installation section, thread is titled: "Spring Installation, Mazda Workshop Manual Notes" and factory TSB notes below. Once you do it right, drive it 500 miles and then do it again (which usually results in another quarter inch or more of lowering)....and then do the alignment. ROCKY'S TIPS: Our head mechanic Rocky has his own method that seems to work even better than the factory TSB. Once he finishes install at each corner he jacks up just that corner with BOTH UPPER AND LOWER LINKs loose, so the full weight of the car is compressing that corner, then he torques the bolts...and he still finds car will settle with 500 miles but usually only another 1/8th inch.

ALIGNMENT:

Alignment depends much on what you do with the car. Assuming no autocross or track use, for pure street driving my suggestion is:

Front Camber -1.8
Toe IN 1/32nd per side (some shops call this 1/16th 'total' toe in).
Caster 6.5

Rear Camber -1.2
Toe IN 1/32nd per side
Racers will take much more camber (and usually full coilovers instead of just these very mild street springs). Autocross customers will toe OUT the front, track users usually toe ZERO front and rear.

These are the same springs that Mazda sold in the MSR package 2007 MX5 that DOMINATED the Stock/Street SCCA Autocross class for years. Take a ride in a fast MSR and notice how fast and stable an MX5 can be with these springs. Note the Miata in video below has our RoadsterSport Suspension Package with these springs and KONI SPORT shocks and our bumpstops and our Progress Sway.

Customer Ian H. from the UK purchased our Progress springs and bumpstop set while he was here on holiday, and then went back to Europe and installed them on his NC and immediately took the car out to Spa Francorchamps and the Nurburgring! Epic!

Ian had this to say: I got the Progress springs and bump stops home safely and installed them the following week. I m very happy with the ride height they ve given me when paired with my existing Koni shocks, and the shorter bump stops have made me realise how much suspension travel I was missing out on. A week later I set off for a trackday at Spa on the 19th, followed by the Nurburgring on the 20th. We didn t have the best weather, but that just added to the challenge. You might just be able to make out the GoodWin stickers on the C pillar of the hardtop. Thanks again for making me feel so welcome.

Progress Technology MX5 Springs.

I had already replaced worn out factory shocks with the Bilstein B6. I had also installed Progress sway bars front and rear. I wasn't much interested in lowering the car, but I thought the Progress springs might gain me a little bit in handling. Since I had already replaced the shocks, I knew how they had to go in. It took me about 4 hours to do the two in front, a bit longer for the rears because you have to pull out the trunk trim pieces to get to the upper shock mount bolts. It all takes a while because once the spring/shock assembly is out, you have to compress the old spring to get the shock out, then compress the new spring to get the shock in.
After several hundred miles and a new wheel alignment, I do think I notice some gain in handling/cornering/stability. Hard for me to say though if this is more due to the new springs or the increased front camber I had put in the alignment - probably a combination of both. My ride height went from 14-7/8" in front and 14-5/8" rear to 14-3/8" all around, so lowered a quarter to half inch. I was also wondering if I would be better off going to the Koni Sport shocks, as many seem to recommend, but so far I feel like the Progress springs and Bilstein B6 shocks are a good combination. I'm interested to see how it feels at my next autocross.
Final note - if you're interested in reducing body roll, then I think sway bars gain you the most on that count, particularly a front sway bar.

I'm new to Miatas, just put 5K on it so far. I first found a full set of tokicos with eibach springs, top hats & adjuster cables for the rear, figured I would try those first. 2" drop & squishy bounce. Much improved handling now with the Progress Springs, my drop is 3/4" now, just what I wanted for the street, way better over railroad tracks & rough roads. Still using stock sways, I need to loosen my shocks and play a bit to dial it in but it's the best ride so far, these are right for me!

Wow! This progress springs paired with the Koni Yellow Adjustable shocks is awesome!. Im in love with my miata again! Im taking the long way to and from work! and taking corners like a pro now Lol!! Flatter, more controlled and tighter on corners !(works well with mazdaspeed sway bars).
Thank you Goodwin racing!

Progress springs & Good-Win's install tips are awesome. As my first major DIY car mod, these springs (& Tokico HTS shocks) transformed my OEM DD sporty car w/99K miles into what feels like a next-level sports car. The ride is firmer, flatter, & more responsive. The nose dive on braking & rear squat on acceleration are gone. Body lean on hard cornering is nearly imperceptible. The OEM speed boat stance is gone, replaced with a beautiful, aggressive-looking rake & lowered stance without unnaturally slammed. I haven't scraped on any speed-bumps or entrance/exits in the 3 days of DDing since install. This upgrade is the biggest-bang-for-buck thing you can do to fix the 'buick-like' OEM NC handling quality. Can't wait for my 2nd season of autocross to start... HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

My 2006 NC had 93k miles on it when I bought it... with original shocks. It was sloppy to say the least. The Progress Technology springs and sways with Koni shocks were the perfect cure for that. With Konis at full soft the car is still very comfortable when in cruise mode (actually much better than with the stock), but when you drop the hammer for some fun in the turns it is much, much flatter, tighter, and more controlled. Definitely the best upgrade I have done yet and for my use (fun street toy and possibly autocross), this seems to be a perfect package.

Fantastic product that really improves the ride without dropping the car's height. These allow you to hammer the car in turns and clear speed bumps without worry. These should have come on the car from the factory because they make the car even better.

Installed these springs with Bilstein B8s. I swapped sway bars and a batch of bushings during the install. Ride height changed 3/8in front and 1/4in rear (after one drive, post-alignment). Ride is improved and sharper.

I have used many springs and coilovers throughout the years, and this is a great street setup.

I needed new shocks at 79K miles so I added these to the job. The initial 1/4 inch drop in appearance is barely noticeable. I understand that another 1/4 inch will come as the car settles; I'm totally ok with that!

The ride is smooth on highways and straightaways, but as soon as I change lanes or hit any curve, the springs with new shocks transform the ride completely from what the stock set up offered. There is virtually no body lean. Just flat, precise performance and driver feedback.

I love these springs, have racing beat sways and stock bilsteins. The ride is better over small bumps and the handling is everything i have heard.I will go konis when the stock shocks wear out.The car is far better with these mods.

Bought the car used, 55,000 miles. Suspension was soft and back end bottomed out frequently. Replaced the shocks, KYB mono-tube,helped a little, but front end sat higher than the rear. Then replaced the springs and what a difference! Proper stance, very little drop from factory original (1/2"), but amazing handling and ride. Firm but comfortable on city streets. Highly recommend these springs!

It's been said before, and I'll confirm - these springs together with the Koni Adjustable are an awesome setup.

Great for daily driver or AutoX. I wish the adjustable mechanism was easier to work - especially the front since it's under the strut brace.
