DESCRIPTION
The smartTOP roof control unit allows opening or closing the convertible top while driving at slow speeds. It works similar to power-windows and opens or closes the roof automatically at the touch of a button. It is not necessary to stop the vehicle and pull the handbrake to operate the roof.

smartTOP - Mazda MX-5
SMARTOP FOR PRHT
It was challenging to figure out how to get the halves of the stock connector apart. You have to "pull hard" but don't want to break it or yank wire(s) loose. I looked at the Smartop unit that plugs in between them and deduced where to hold each half with my channel locks and pliers, then gave the connector a shot of WD40 to help it separate. Also had to unscrew the bridge in front to access the connector. It was a relief when it popped apart and from there, the install was easy.
The top works pretty well. Be sure to keep your speed below the maximum setting you choose until the roof cycling is complete. After I popped the top and drove off, exceeding the limit before the rear deck closed, it started screaming at me. I didn't realize the deck lid was still up until I turned my head around instead of just looking in the mirror. I imagine I could have damaged the roof if it stalled before it tucked in or I went fast enough to let the deck lid catch a strong enough wind blast.
Works great! Spent a long time getting the plug unseated but once that was done I had everything in and back together in a flash. Just going to print up a small laminated card with the function/setting matrix to keep in the glove box.
Installation was special- Tried both ways- through the cubbie and from the opened hatch...tried different angles, etc. Overall, it was a pain the bottom. I finally got it installed and I really like it. Programming was easy, works as described. My suggestion is to just take your time and go slow. It's really not that hard to do, just tricky....
Install was easy, the operation took a tiny bit of tuition but worked perfectly as advertised and feels perfectly natural. Highly recommended!
Perfect part to add to a fuel pump job because you will be working right against the module anyhow. (behind driver's seat)
Easy to install,was up and running after half an hour.
I thought I would not need a Smart-Top module until I got caught in a quick rain shower at a stop sign and having to move off the roadway to put my top up. Wet but smiling, I went home and ordered one from GWR. It was not hard to install but disconnecting the connector is a challenge but plenty of help was found on Miata.net. I cannot think of not having a Smart-Top module after living with one for a few weeks. Great update and great customer service from GWR.
Easy to install. Works great. Eliminates the frustration of raising or lowering the top at a stop light or entering or exiting a parking lot.
