DESCRIPTION

MOTUL Technosynthese Semi-synthetic high performance lubricant for MINI Cooper manual transmissions. This is an excellent transmission fluid for ALL manual transmission Gen 1 and Gen 2 Mini Coopers, both non-S and S models with or without a limited slip.

Picking the right transmission fluid can seem complicated; BMW/MINI seem to spec a different fluid for every color and trim level of car, and an online search for MINI Coooper trans fluid can send you down a rabbit hole with everyone having a different opinion. A lot of folks give in and buy the overpriced $50 per can factory fluid simply because they don't know all the intricacies of transmission fluids and don't want to make a misstep. The bottom line though (purists cover your ears!) is that there is no fancy fairy dust in the MINI transmission that requires some ultra specific fluid. If you sift through all the chaff, all it boils down to is that manual transmission MINIs need a good quality 75W-80 fluid with GL-4/GL-5 properties. Unlike RWD cars, whether it has a limited slip or not shouldn't affect the fluid choice because in the transaxle the fluid is shared between the transmission and limited slip, so you want the same fluid either way. Much is made over whether a fluid can be mixed with the factory transmission fluid... and that is classic 'missing the forest for the trees' because you aren't ever going to be trying to run 50% factory fluid and 50% new fluid. You'll be draining the transmission entirely, and filling it with your new high performance fluid - and then keep a bottle of the same stuff on hand for topping off if needed. A tiny bit of residual factory fluid remaining will make no difference and nobody needs to worry about whether you can mix the two.

For primarily street use with the occasional high performance driving like autocross or a track day, we recommend this factory spec 75W-80. For pure race cars or cars seeing lots of track days, we recommend the slightly heavier Motul Gear 300 75W-90 available elsewhere on our site as it will provide a bit more protection at prolonged high temperatures, and that is also the fluid recommended for use with the OS Giken limited slip.
