Magnaflow Miata Exhaust System

This system was on my car when I bought it. It works great. It's quite loud and buzzy when cold, but warm it up for two minutes, and the buzz goes away replaced with a very deep and smooth sound. Wide open throttle releases a very pleasant roar. I'd say a 7 out of 10 for loudness, no rice. It's got a bit of drone at part throttle on the freeway, but nothing too serious. The tip looks very nice too.

So let me start by saying the sound and construction are everything I expected. I've used Magnaflow products in the past and have always been happy.

The two-star deduction is due to one major problem - there is absolutely no way this product will fit a 2001 Miata as designed. Cutting the stock pipe at the location mentioned in the instructions would result in trying to stuff the reduced section of the Magnaflow pipe into a 15 degree bend. Not to mention the reduced section is almost exactly the same size as the stock pipe, and would not fit even if both sections were straight.

Luckily I had mocked up the exhaust as best as possible before cutting and noticed the fitment problem. After removing the catalytic/mid-pipe assembly and lining it up with the new Magnaflow piece, I realized I could cut the stock pipe a few inches behind the last oxygen sensor wire mount, then remove approximately 8" from the Magnaflow pipe, and everything would line up. I also found the stock pipe fits snugly into the non-reduced Magnaflow pipe, so no issues with adapters or messing with tailpipe expanders. Quick trip to the parts store for a slightly larger clamp and I was good to go.

The larger exhaust tip looks great on the car, and I love the tone. Can buzz a little when cold, but that goes away within a few shifts. Outside of the extra time and effort to do the modification, I am very pleased.
