PART NUMBER: 60-1161
The stock Miata airbox is restrictive by its design to allow use of an inexpensive and flat paper filter. The AEM intake achieves better breathing by using a much higher flowing velocity stack conical filter placed directly in the flow of cool air in the "mouth" of the Miata.
Not only will this intake give your MX5 Miata much freer breathing and quicker acceleration, but also provide a nice deep growl at high revs. This is the same intake that MAZDA sells for all MX5s in the new Pro Spec racing series. More information and installation pictures in our forum.
This AEM 21-640P/C is CARB CERTIFIED for 2006 through 2009, CARB EO Number D-670-15. NOT CARB LEGAL for 2010-2015.
Note that the factory elbow going into the throttle body changed in 2009. For install on 2009 and beyond you will not use the elbow supplied by AEM - instead you will use your factory rubber elbow and insert the AEM upper inlet tube into that stock elbow. (picture of this kit above shows everything included in the kit, including new rubber elbow at top of the picture but for 2009-2011 application you will use the factory elbow instead).
Note: Installation requires removal of the front bumper.

Excellent instructions with very useful pictures to assist in the install. I had much of the front end disassembled for other work so it only took an hour to install. Highly recommend.
The instructions were concise and visual. The AEM intake is well made, and fit my car like a glove. You do, however, need to take off the front bumper and skid plate/fender liners in order to install the intake (per instructions). The intake came with all necessary parts and its fitment to the chassis was perfect. When I started my car with the new CAI, the exhaust notes at idle were slightly lower in pitch (not night and day, but noticeable). Hitting the throttle, I could hear the intake suck in air, and once I entered the power band my car seemed more alive, and the exhaust growl became more apparent. Overall, the car is more rev happy, it has a deeper growl, and it gets up to speed a little quicker. If this is a placebo effect, it was worth every penny.
