A Revolutionary Helmholtz Chamber Race Muffler for Max Fun!
PART NUMBER: 61-1733
Most FUN Miata race muffler right here, yet not for everyone! Designed originally for SCCA CS class autocross on otherwise stock exhaust system. Not designed for use with headers.
Call it Dual Personality, Call it Jekyll and Hyde, this is the Rebel in our exhaust lineup and the sound level result depends on what you are doing with the gas pedal and the gear selection. Designed originally as our SCCA CS autocross muffler for those in competition on the weekends that want something that will pass SCCA sound limits for competition days and be fun on the way to and from work during the week. Slam the gas to the floor and run for redline and you get a wonderfully throaty throbbing exotic racing rumble with lots of burble that sounds BETTER than an MX5 Cup Car. BUT when you close throttle our unique tuned helmholtz chamber clips the midrange drone you would otherwise get with any setup this minimal, making it relatively mild on decel and when just cruising in top gear on the freeway. What we have here is the first Miata Race muffler sane folks can really live with every day without pissing off the wife or the neighbors (unless they WANT to).
The secret to getting all this fun without the pain of drone on decel is the exclusive LARGE Helmholtz chamber included in this design. In fact, this design is ALL BIG Helmholtz and no traditional sound absorbing materials unless you get the optional race baffle. For these reasons, this choice is designed and intended for max FUN on otherwise stock ND, the volume will overwhelm if you add a catless header.
Tarnish Alert! One downside of making this minimum weight is no fake double walled tip to keep the outside metal looking pretty, you must expect with this single walled choice that it will tarnish with heat because that's what happens to single walled stainless steel. If that will bother you, get any of our other choices that has a double walled tip and weighs more as a result (see our SuperStreet Single and TwinTip in particular since they are based on same straight pipe design).
How did we do it? We outfitted our 2016 with a computer and sound spectrum analyzer and microphones and drove it under varying conditions and loads with and without muffler. We then use that data and some special software to calculate the particulars of the Helmholtz chamber to precisely knock down the frequencies we do not want to hear in the car while allowing the good throaty burble fun sounds to pass through. In brief, FUN when you want it, and mild when just cruising. The Helmholtz chamber knocks down over 40db of sound in the 120-130 hertz range. That does NOT mean no bass sound, it does mean massive reduction of drone you otherwise get with a straight pipe design
All this in a 12 pound design, a big drop from the 20.5 pound factory muffler. Includes a straight through high flow design from the midpipe out the polished pipe tip for max power.
SHIPPING NOTE...ships factory direct to you. All POLISHED 304 stainless steel construction and LIFETIME warranty. Uses stock hangers and connects to either our midpipe or the stock midpipe.
NO BAFFLE INCLUDED but takes our optional Race Baffle that slides in and lowers sound level for the extra long drives or between racing weekends (baffle sold separate on this website).
IF you have more than 20,000 miles add a fresh donut gasket, our item 61-2144, factory part number RFK2-40-581) The factory designed the joint between muffler and midpipe as BOTH a flex joint and a sealing point and the impregnated graphite 'donut' gasket slowly grinds itself thinner and thinner. Those under 20k miles usually find the original still works great, those over about 20k miles usually best to start with fresh donut gasket.
Proudly made in the USA, emissions legal in CA and every other State of the Union.
BRIAN'S APPLICATION NOTES: Mild when cruising on otherwise stock ND, delivering a classic sports car BARK and THROATY RUMBLE when you wind it out to redline. Fun burble when just playing with the throttle around town. Easily UNDER our local SCCA sound limits on otherwise stock Miata (our SCCA limit here is 93 db at 50 feet and even in the rain our testing found it easily under our strictly enforced sound limits). Also easily under the most strict 92db days at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca when used on otherwise stock ND. Result is TONS of fun, will make many of you laugh out loud. You also get the best performance from the straightest and cleanest flow out the exhaust cutout you can get, and much lower weight.
NOT for the faint of heart!!! The most common question we will get on this one is: "will it be too loud" and we cannot answer that one for you because the "right" sound level is a matter of entirely subjective personal preference. We can say our experience with thousands of customers has taught us that Automatic transmission owners prefer our bigger SuperQ muffler choices. If you think it normal to drive a Miata around town always in the 1000 to 2500 rpm range, lugging the motor as if a Miata is a diesel truck, we suggest that this is not your muffler. If you are not going to use the motor for the fun to be found from 3000 rpms through redline every week, we ask you please get one of our bigger choices like the RoadsterSport SuperQ. IF you visit redline often, this might be your muffler! We tune the helmholtz chamber for the range that most folks cruise down the freeway in the car, knocking down over 40 db at peak drone in the 120 to 130 hertz range between 2700 and 3200 rpms. Without the helmholtz chamber the major drone peak is 2700 to 3200 rpms with a pure straight pipe. The goal was straight pipe performance reasonably tamed with minimum weight so it can be enjoyed in a daily driver that might go SCCA race on the weekends.
If our RoadsterSport SuperQ is 10 to 15% more sound than stock (depending on use of removable baffle), this RACE is a full 50 to 55% more sound than stock when on throttle, though perhaps just 20% over stock when cruising home in high gear down the freeway. Not designed for use on car with header or midpipe change, designed for max fun on otherwise stock exhaust system. Adding header adds a massive amount of sound, thus we suggest customers considering adding a header should look to our SuperQ choices. The issue with using adjustable length midpipe with this three hanger design is that customers rarely get the length correct and that can put too much stress on the connection between helmholtz chamber and straight pipe, so if you insist on adding midpipe with this design be careful to get length of midpipe accurate (hangers aligned nicely straight up and down for midpipe) and use thicker hanger from the rear to better support the bigger midpipe.
Slant cut to dress it up just a bit!
Not designed for customers planning to change to catless headers. Catless headers with this muffler is far too loud for street use. Our SuperQ Header Version is the muffler for customers with headers.Ride Along with our RoadsterSport Race in a Launch Edition owned by local customer Mark Booth below, big thanks to Mark for the great video!
Note the RACE does not include any baffle but we offer an OPTIONAL
Packed Baffle that gives you the ability to quiet it down significantly. Adding our RoadsterSport Midpipe doesn't change the character of the sound but adds ANOTHER 20% more sound over and above what you get with the RoadsterSport Race. Below is a sample of that sound combo of our RoadsterSport Midpipe and this RoadsterSport Race muffler courtesy of our own Ryan Passey:
BRIAN'S INSTALL NOTES:
Installation of this Miata exhaust is SUPER EASY. I do this install at home in my driveway with NO jacking up of the car and it takes me 5 minutes to swap the muffler. Get the exhaust hanger removal tool from home depot or Amazon (costs just TEN DOLLARS last I checked on Amazon and well worth every penny!). You then need a 14mm and 13mm socket and one ratchet, plus some spray soap or minute wax or even just a dab of dish soap to lube the hangers. If you are prepared, it might take you 15 to 20 minutes the first time, just 5 minutes for me because I have done it a few hundred times. Put a soft piece of cardboard on the ground or a thick old towel for some padding.
When you open the big box you will find separate foam wrap on the exhaust tip, leave that foam around the tip during your install to protect the polished tips and your car's soft plastic in the exhaust cutout. Use gloves. Note the 'bolts' from the factory are actually studs with springs and nuts and the factory usually jams the nuts on so hard that unbolting it will bring the stud out too. If that does not happen then use a 13mm long socket to unscrew the studs, or use jam nut technique where both nuts are put on one stud against each other and then wrench used on the inner of the two to back out the stud. Then lube up the stock exhaust hangers with dish soap and yank stock muffler back and forth to work the soap into the rubber hangers and then the muffler will slide off those rubber hangers easily. Then hang the new muffler on the wet and soapy rubber hangers and torque 'bolts' with the springs back in place to 30ft/lbs. Now you can remove foam tip wrap. Note the muffler to midpipe joint is a ball socket connection for the first time on a Miata, it is designed to move a lot on that very special stock high density ball socket gasket, so please do not add sealants that will gum up that dry ball socket joint. Our pipe size is bigger than OEM for best flow, that means the stock donut gasket sinks a bit deeper than with factory muffler. Our flange is designed as a dual purpose item that allows going to flat gasket if you later go 2.5 inch midpipe, at which point the midpipe has a flex joint to replace function of the donut. After install hold you hands about 2 inches from gasket connection with car running to check if you feel 'puff puff puff' indication of leak against your hands, if you do check your install or replace the factory gasket (our item 61-2144, factory part number RFK2-40-581 )

I have a 2019 MX-5 RF that we recently purchased. I noticed right away that I could hear the motor but could not hear the OEM exhaust from inside the car, top down, while driving with enthusiasm. I then looked to see what Goodwin Racing had to offer. I quickly noticed the ND Roadstersport RACE muffler. I liked the "RACE" part but I did not think my wife would appreciate it the same way. So I purchased w/o wife's knowledge and promptly installed.
Our evaluation is that this car is a Sportster and should sound like a Sportster. This muffler should be called , "The Perfect Sportster ND Muffler", exclude "RACE" from title, it scares people with wives from purchasing. No drone at all, at anytime, can not hear while driving at cruse speed and light throttle. Go WOT and let the music begin, beautiful sound, not to loud at all in my opinion, wife agrees. She is pleased, I am pleased, happy life.
Installed on a 6000 mile 2024 MX5 sport. With the wind noise from the cloth top, I wanted some exhaust note, but didn't want to go crazy. This is definitely a great sounding exhaust, with no drone. I daily drive on the freeway during the warm months; the sound is not fatiguing, but it gives a satisfying note when you get on it.
Packaging was impressive and the part came with no defects or marks.
Install was not bad, took less than an hour, didn't even need to jack up the car. Even with the relatively new car, the two studs were nearly seized, so expect to use a breaker on them or bust knuckles. I would have bought new studs/nuts if I had known how close I was to destroying the OEM ones so you may want to consider getting a spare set before starting the project. The recommendations elsewhere for soapy water on the rubber isolators is good. The new muffler only uses 3 of the 4 original hangers.
For the 2024 I think the weight savings are more than advertised. That OEM muffler is a heavy chunk of steel.
Very happy with the quality, self-install and definitely the tone and sound for both a 6 MT and 6 AT. For both I find that at 3K and above is where i notice the difference from stock to these. The 6 MT is perfect everywhere. The 6 AT I notice a slight difference then the 6 MT at 2K but very acceptable to me as it is not a drone type sound but a reminder that I changed something and know I am driving an ICE motor. I personally want to always hear some exhaust tone even at idle. All in all well worth the purchase!

Install was straight forward...didn't have to jack or use ramps...wife helped me...we are both 70....so went a little slower...hardest part was laying on the garage floor and getting up...lol....sounds great even for a old guy with hearing loss
Could honestly be louder, and it's a bummer a straight pipe dump isn't available like for the NC MX5 and this was the only next choice at a much higher price. I discovered after installing I actually like the drone and (woooohm) sounds this is probably tuning out.
The good though, significant power increase, very noticeable and I was quite surprised how much extra push the car seemed to give above 5k. The sound is also very smooth and clean. As I said, not loud at all and any burbles and pops downshifting may produce is very very subtle, but enjoyable none-the-less.
I tried reusing my 40k old donut gasket and it was leaking a bit under throttle, but adding two washer on each spring stud seems to have sealed it about 99% all the way.
Overall happy purchase, and a must have over the near silent stock muffler
Should be your first upgrade!
Is this the one for you? Really depends on why you own a Miata. Is this just another car for you? Just to get from point A to B? Maybe not your cup of tea.
Do you want to actually hear your Miata? Want get instant audio feedback on what the engine is doing? Don't want your interior rattling with a booming drone? Want to giggle as you redline getting on the freeway feeling like you might lose your license because you have to be nearing 95, when in reality you are approaching 65? This is for you!
At 37, I'm not looking for that crazy loud exhaust with included gun shot pops and bangs. Perfect level of noise to let you know what's going on without being obnoxious.
Super light (Compared to stock)
Clean single tip
Great tone
No annoying drone
Super easy install
I'm a fan!
Also, Brian and team are phenomenal. In today's day and age, not often will you find a company where the owner is up late answering emails for prospects and customers.
Great exhaust. I was on the fence worried it might be a little loud, but I'm really glad I went with this one. It's not too loud at all, and it sounds fantastic. After hearing the quieter versions at cars n coffee, I think this one is the one to get. The quieter ones are "too quiet" for me. There isn't much drone, but when you punch it, it sounds like a classic roadster with a great growl. I look forward to downshifts now because the sound so good.
Installation wasn't too bad, getting the stock exhaust off was the hardest part, those rubber hangers hang on for dear life. Make sure you have some grease.

I acquired my Brother's 2020 Club with only 7300 miles. Absolutely pristine and it has never been dirty. I flew out to Bend and drove it home 1800 miles exactly to my driveway to KC in mid October. Took the northern route for a beautiful three day drive home. The Recaros were amazing. I had ordered a fresh set of Khumos and a fresh battery and shipped them to Bend to install for a worry free drive home. The shop was fabulous and did an excellent blemish free install and alignment. i'm not a dark wheel guy so fortunately the installer had the BBS wheels stripped and powder coated a bright aluminum while they were dismounted. When I got home I got busy looking for the right exhaust system. My research steered me to the Goodwin Racing race system taking advantage of the Goodwin Racing Black Friday shipping included deal and pulled the trigger. I then shopped for a 1.5 Ton Aluminum Jack and Jack stands plus an exhaust hanger removal tool from Amazon and finally a Black Friday special on a 3/8 drive Ryobi Impact wrench. Today I installed the race system and am absolutely blown away by the symphony sound it produces. Definitely looking forward to some open track time when the weather brakes. My next order will be for some Braided Stainless brake lines from Goodwin Racing of course. I convinced my spouse I was accomplishing all these changes for what it would have cost me to ship it home!
"Almost"
Absolutely the BEST purchase I ever made, second to buying the Miata itself. The Roadster sport race muffler makes the car feel so much more alive while not being obnoxiously loud. It has a deep tone so it's not ear piercing, quiet under low rpm and soft acceleration, but wakes up once you get on it and it sounds SO good. Shipped super quick, only took about 2 1/2 days, packaging is very nice with lots of protection, and everything is assembled from factory so the install was a breeze. Took about 15 min total, most of the time was just jacking up the car and putting it on stands. 10/10 would recommend for any ND owner.
Installed this on my ND2 over the weekend.
The good folks at Goodwin Racing wont warn you about this, so I will.
Installing this exhaust will add extra muscle strain in the jaw area from excessive smiling while driving. I haven't stopped smiling for about 2 days now, eating and talking is difficult. I might have to see a specialist, will keep you posted.
I recently installed the RoadsterSport Race on my ND2 Miata, and I can confidently say it exceeded every expectation I had.
Right off the bat, the weight difference between the stock exhaust and the Race is shocking. Lifting them side by side really shows just how much unnecessary weight the stock system carries. The Race shaves that right off and adds something far more valuable in return: character.
I was originally torn between the Race and the SuperStreet Single Tip, carefully comparing clips and reading reviews. Ultimately, I chose the Race because I wanted a louder, rawer sound - something that pushed the car's spirit to the surface. The Race does exactly that.
It doesn't just make noise, it builds on the stock tone in the best way possible. It retains the Miata's natural voice but refines and amplifies it into something more defined, more aggressive, and more alive. At idle and during casual cruising, it's composed and quiet. But when you open it up and really push the car, the Race responds with a deep, raw growl that produces a clean, aggressive sound without sounding forced or cheap like some other loud exhausts.
This exhaust makes my Miata sound like a true lightweight sports car - it doesn't try to imitate anything else. It simply brings out the best in what's already there. The sound alone makes me want to keep driving. Every rev, every shift, every throttle blip feels more engaging.
Big thanks to Good-Win-Racing. This exhaust is exactly what I wanted, and I'm glad I trusted my gut.
I ordered this on Thursday and it was in my living room by Monday afternoon. Thanks to the auto parts tariff exemption I didn't even pay anything extra. Awesome. I was so excited I immediately ran out to install it and forgot to record a before video for my brother. Dude, this sounds so good. Reviews are talking about how it really starts to sing at higher revs but I'll be honest that gurgling at lower revs is so nice, without being obnoxious in neutral. It's the perfect level of aggressive. I keep finding reasons to go for a drive just to listen to the exhaust. It has completely changed the character of this car for the better. I thought originally I should maybe go for the sport version but I'm glad I went this route, this is meant to be a fun car and not to sit in traffic twice a day. I just hit 1000km on the odo and I don't regret making this modification this early. Cannot wait to rip this car through a tunnel. Now I just need those RF Progress Springs to tighten up the aggressive look to go with the sound.
Exellent proper sounding roadster now I love the race muffler I also bought the baffle(just in case) but I haven't had the need to try it yet. I highly recommend this muffler!
Great exhaust. Just put this on my '23 GT RF and love the sound. I've heard some people say it was pretty loud, but honestly I don't think it's all that loud. If anything, I wouldn't mind it even louder. The helmholtz chamber works like a charm. There is no drone at all when cruising at 2-3k, then get on the throttle and it wakes up and sounds great. Proper roadster noises and much needed on this car because the stock exhaust sounds like a sowing machine. It REALLY helps with downshifting and throttle response with the clutch in.
The hardest part of the install was getting the stock muffler off, but this one went on pretty easy.
Definitely worth it. It's like a different car.
I've been wavering back and forth on which muffler to get before deciding on the Roadstersport Race - after a few drives I'm convinced I made the correct choice. Install took 30 minutes - could have been done in 15 if I kept moving. I bought a cheapo pair of exhaust hanger pliers and that made it very easy. Love the sound change at the bottom and the top, no significant midrange drone even on my mostly freeway commute - very MG'ish sound to my ears. I'm a very happy customer!
Bought the Mazda Miata ND RoadsterSport RACE muffler and I'm very happy with it. Love how it sounds compared to stock. Got a good rumble but not obnoxious.
My order came in earlier than expected given I live in the East coast. I followed the installations from YouTube and was successful. The sound of the muffler definitely gave the Miata that sports car sound. Even my wife noticed it without any knowledge of me installing one (lol). Mazda should have installed this type of muffler right off the factory.
It was very easy to install. I used vaseline instead of soapy water.
The sound is perfect. Bellow 3,000 rev it is very smooth.
Sounds amazing!
Easy install!
I purchased a cheap hanger removal tool, and I highly suggest it. Makes the install under 20 minutes.
The exhaust sounds so much better than stock without being completely annoying. Has a nice meaty growl to it in the lower rev range.
Wish I bought this earlier!!
Love this exhaust. Super easy install. I replaced the doughnut as suggested at the same time. Only hold up was the bolts didn't want to come off the OEM. Don't be afraid to muscle up on them. This exhaust is light!! I know some people have mentioned it was too loud for their tastes, but I haven't really noticed that. It just gives the car a nice, modded sound so you know it's not original in my opinion. Very happy!
