This is a drop-in fit for 1999-2003 Miatas. NOTE for 2004-2005 Miatas: Notes from customers who have installed this wheel on 04-05 years is that you may need to source the 4-bolt metal air bag frame from a 99-03 steering wheel to be able to fit your airbag to the Cipher wheel, replacing the 3-bolt bracket that is in the 04-05 steering wheel. You can get this part by buying a second hand 99-03 steering wheel from a junkyard, ebay, etc.

WHEN REMOVING THE STEERING WHEEL:
If you need to remove the Cipher steering wheel for any reason after it has been installed, first try simply wiggling it as you pull - this is usually enough, especially if you greased the splines prior to install. If it's too tight, you may need to use a steering wheel puller tool (you can rent these from most auto parts stores). However, if you use a steering wheel puller, DO NOT place any of the hooks on the bottom spoke that is only connected to the center of the wheel by a thin section of metal as you risk breaking that spoke. Only place the puller's hooks on the upper area of the steering wheel's center hub where there is a solid and strong connection with the surrounding metal. Never use excessive force to try to remove the steering wheel.
These same notes apply as well to removing the factory steering wheel, but less critical because if you break the factory wheel you may not mind since you're replacing the wheel anyways - but you certainly do not want to damage your new Cipher steering wheel!

Cipher Auto Enhanced Leather Steering Wheel for NB
This wheel exceeded my expectations. I wanted a new wheel to replace my old Nardi wheel, but most importantly keep the airbag for safety. The Cipher wheel does this. The contour on the wheel fits my (large) hands well. I feel confident when cornering that my hands won't slip. Normal cruising it's comfortable. Styling is fresh, gives the car a nice OEM+ look. I'm happy with my purchase and would recommend this wheel to anyone.
I switched from an aftermarket Nardi that was thinner and had more of a classic look. One issue I didn't like was it required a hub that positioned the wheel about two inches closer to me. This wheel did not require a hub so I don't feel cramped. The Nardi was also hard as a rock. The Cipher is super comfortable and the feel, quality, and looks are fantastic. No matter where I position my hands, the grip felt natural. It took a few months before I finally pulled trigger, mostly because of it's price, but once I installed it, I was totally convince it was worth it - so much so that I told my brother to buy one for his NC.
Beautiful steering wheel! It took about 30 mins to install. I personally feel much confident with steering compared to the wood steering wheel. Highly recommend to anyone in the market for an aftermarket steering wheel.
After 20 years of sun and high humidity, made worse by a leaking roof, my original wheel was ugly, cracked, and getting uncomfortable to hold. This Cipher wheel is amazing. In looking for a replacement wheel, keeping the factory airbag was essential (as an ER doc I can attest that an airbag can save your life). The Cipher wheel was one of the only I found that allowed me to keep the airbag -- and, it looks and feels amazing. I did the install myself after watching a few Youtube videos and reading a few Miata.net threads. It was extremely easy. I got but never needed to use a wheel puller (returned it unopened). The steering wheel came off easily with a little "nudge" with the base of my hand. (mind the recs to leave the center nut loosely in place so you don't pull off the wheel and smack yourself in the face!) The most time-consuming part (~10 min.) was transferring the parts from the old wheel to the new (the airbag, the frame for the horn contacts, the column shroud).
That's it. It was quite simple. What they don't really emphasize and you may not appreciate in the photos is that the lower sides (4 o'clock and 8 o'clock) are "flat" around the circumference, making it very comfortable to rest your left elbow on the armrest with your left hand on the wheel when cruising on the highway. I recommend this product without reservations. It's also gorgeous to look at.
For owners of 2004 and 2005 NB's, this Cipher wheel is not compatible with the metal air bag frame that needs to be swapped out of the factory wheel and mounted into the new Cipher in order to reinstall the factory air bag.The 1999 to 2003 NB factory wheels have a 4 point metal air bag frame that the Cipher is designed for. The 2004 and 2005 stock wheels have a 3 point AB frame that will not swap into the new Cipher wheel thus no way to reinstall the air bag. I had to buy a wheel on eBay from a 2002 NB to obtain the correct fitting air bag frame. Other than that, the Cipher is beautiful!
Really love this wheel. It changes the look of the inside of the car making it look more updated. It has a great feel to it and makes driving very comfortable. It is just a little thicker than the stock wheel and gives a much better grip.
Once again I am 100% happy with my purchase. This wheel replaces the stock wheel that I never cared for. It is thicker and way more comfortable. Plus it looks fantastic. I chose the silver stitching and it looks amazing. Installation was a breeze, just took my time, waited 10 full min. after pulling the negative lead, just to be sure. Swapped the horn bracket internally that was a perfect fit, mounted and re-installed the airbag. Maybe an hour...
Fit and finish is seamless. It looks and feels like the wheel that should have been stock.
