Hard Dog is proud to introduce their new Roll Bar for the 2016+ MX-5 and 2017+ Fiat 124. Shown here on MX5 but fits the Fiat the same. Built from heavy wall 1.75" diameter tubing these bars are a serious upgrades from the stock ND equipment. The aluminum factory cross brace and hoops are removed and replaced. A harness bar with an integral top latch bracket is included as standard equipment. The stock seat belts are retained without alteration.
The M4 Sport main hoop shares the same structural attachments as the factory hoop. Additional support is provided by 2 rearward braces w/ large 3/16" mounting and back-up reinforcement plates anchored with grade 8 bolts and self locking nuts. Note, this does not include a speaker bracket for the optional Bose stereo.

Hard Dog M4 SPORT Bar
Roll bar itself is much stronger than the stock aluminum box and fragile looking hoops. Installation was a real PITA and the instructions were next to useless. With better instructions the installation would have been much easier. The instructions SHOULD have identified which bolts to remove (with photos) and which parts would not be reinstalled. Included photos were of such poor quality that it was nearly impossible to determine what they were referring to. I would recommend that you take photos of the fasteners as they are removed so you can identify the proper location when reinstalling them.
Bar was packaged well and arrived in great condition. Instructions on Bethania garage's website were helpful. Originally I was going to leave out all the interior plastics but I realized they are important for supporting the rear window glass with the top down. Also the plastics block a lot of NVH so I did substantial trimming and put the plastics back in for the rear wheel wells and center between the seats. The bar is at least an inch taller than OEM and it may be placebo but the car seems to drive different and better with the added rigidity.
The install was relatively painless and I did it myself over the course of three days after work. I employed the kids to help to lower it into the car so I didn't scratch anything, but other than that it was a one-person job. Note if you are using this to become track legal: I am 5' 9" and my helmet touched (just barely) during a broomstick test. Lowering rails will be required if you are 5' 10" or bigger.
I bought the M4 Sport primarily with mounting a race harness to the integrated bar in mind. I was able to retain the main storage area factory plastic through a simple modification: placing a 'slot' above the driver's side storage bay door. The geometry is: 14-1/4' UP from the main lower push-in fastener center for the slot's centerline + OVER 10' and 16' measured from the centerline of the panel (center of main/locked storage latch or center of the aperture of the roof latch). The 1/2' slot was laid out on painter's tape and easily cut.
Great fit, everything works including the behind the seat storage. Some plastic had to be trimmed but unless you are looking for it it is not noticeable. Bose amp did not require much from my installer. Overall very happy with both the Roll Bar and Good win's speedy service
