NEW 2021 updated design has more thickness for better feel, a flatter bottom, and slightly more thumb curvature at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock posiions. We had the old version of this wheel in our turbo NC, and the first prototype of the new updated version went in that same car (pics of wheel with red stitching and center stripe are the new model), and our feeling here is it is an overall improvement and refinement on an already great upgrade for the NC! The old version was a little thinner than we wanted and didn't have quite enough shape to it, but this new model gets all those details just right. A must-do upgrade to your NC... as soon as you drive with it you'll wonder how you ever lived so long with the basic, old, deteriorating factory steering wheel!

The REAL carbon fiber steering wheel below has a matte finish on the carbon, red stitching on the leather, and no center stripe:

There is also a Hydro-Dipped carbon fiber look with a gloss finish, red stitching on the leather, and a red center stripe. This version is NOT real carbon fiber; hydro dipping is essentially a printed "look" done on a smooth surface, but with the gloss over the top of it it looks quite similar to real carbon fiber, and comes in at the same price as the other all-leather models:

INSTALLATION NOTE: We recommend applying a little grease to the splines of the new steering wheel before sliding it on to the splines of the steering column. WD-40 works well.

WHEN REMOVING THE STEERING WHEEL:
If you need to remove the Cipher steering wheel for any reason after it has been installed, first try simply wiggling it as you pull - this is usually enough, especially if you greased the splines prior to install. If it's too tight, you may need to use a steering wheel puller tool (you can rent these from most auto parts stores). However, there's more than one type of steering wheel puller! DO NOT use the universal type that grabs the wheel with hooks. The NC steering wheel has two threaded holes in the center portion for pressing the steering wheel off, and there is a steering wheel puller designed to be used with these holes - it's available for rent at most Autozone stores. If you must use a steering wheel puller with the hooks, DO NOT place any of the hooks on the bottom spoke that is only connected to the center of the wheel by a thin section of metal as you risk breaking that spoke. Only place the puller's hooks on the upper area of the steering wheel's center hub where there is a solid and strong connection with the surrounding metal. Never use excessive force to try to remove the steering wheel.
These same notes apply as well to removing the factory steering wheel, but less critical because if you break the factory wheel you may not mind since you're replacing the wheel anyways - but you certainly do not want to damage your new Cipher steering wheel!

Love steering wheel, came on time, looks fantastic and instruction video was easy to follow!

I LOVE my Cipher Red Stripe wheel. This is a great upgrade for any MX5, and wish I had made the move sooner. You touch the wheel every time you drive, so treat your self to a softer, thicker, sculpted wheel. Install was easy and straightforward, instructions are well document on the web. Include the cost of an alignment with the steering wheel because I can promise you the wheel will not be true when you are done. Your roadster is due for one anyway.

This is the second upgrade item for my NC2 and I am extremely happy with the product. The steering wheel changes the entire feel of the driving experience for the better. I recommend this upgrade with enthusiasm.

Took me a year to decide if I truly needed this alteration. As the stock wheel is very usable. But since I drive the vehicle every day, I figured why not, maybe this will make control of the car just that much better. Disassembly of the original wheel from the vehicle and installation of the Cipher wheel was very straightforward.
Disconnected the battery, marked the position of the original wheel with painters' tape, on the steering column, removed the horn assembly cover, disconnected airbag leads and all the required component wires.
Used a 21 mm socket and the breaker bar and wheel was off.
Disassembled the back cover and the three front wheel cover plates. Routed the wires on the new wheel and transferred all plates and controls. Aligned the wheel to the splined shaft and pressed it down into place. Tightened the set nut, made connections, and all was returned to like new!

The wheel is very nice, has a great feel, and is more tactile than stock. There are more variations in the grip circumference dimensions and formed profiles in the wheel than expected.
Nice upgrade, really appreciate the several ways to relax your hand grip a bit more on the wheel based on its shape.
Mods - Purchased the red stitched wheel with red center stripe, but only wanted this one aspect. Since I have stormy blue mica paint - did not want the red, so used black leather dye to change the stitching color, turned out great.
Very happy with the wheel all said and done - Nice!

Wheel is fantastic! Makes the car feel so much better. The stock wheel always felt too thin. It was a lot of money but worth it.

Wow! I've done a lot of mods on my NC3, but so far this is one of my favorites. The wheel is beautiful and well crafted. It instantly refreshes the interior of the car, and the feel is so much more solid with the thicker more ergonomic grips. Requires an alignment afterwards, so just consider that in the price when you purchase.

I splurged on the real carbon fiber wheel, and have no regrets! This steering wheel is not only a thing-of-art, it also feels so darn comfortable in my hands. Truly a wonderful upgrade especially when driving twisty roads the steering feel is so reassured and precise. Easily justifies the expense.

Definitely a step up in quality and design from the stock wheel. I rented a steering wheel puller from OReillys to pull the stock wheel and found that the rental is actually free! You pay for the tool and when you return it you get a 100% refund. Make sure if you rent a puller that it comes with metric bolts to fit the Miata wheel. The splines on my Cipher wheel were offset a bit from the stock wheel and the closest spline position still resulted in the steering wheel being off by about 10 degrees. To fix that, I adjusted the tie rod ends just 1/4 turn and that resulted in perfect alignment. A real pleasure to drive the car with this new wheel.

Simply put....If you don't already have one of these steering wheels....Get one! That is all:)

Installed Ciphers beautiful black leather/grey stitched steering wheel into my 2010 MX-5 Touring. Luckily Mazda made a steering wheel swap relatively easy! The fit and finish of this wheel is truly second to none. Interior drivers touch points are critical to me and this steering wheel does not disappoint! Ordering through Goodwin was a win and would 100% recommend this to anyone that understands the importance of quality touch points.

Great fitment and quality, I've paid more for steering wheels that fit poorly so I was skeptical about this given its price point being pretty low but I was very happy after installing it. Great quality, easy install and great price.

Beautiful wheel at a great price. My stock OEM wheel had high wear signs despite a low mileage vehicle so I decided this Cipher wheel was a good replacement. This turned out to be a great upgrade considering the steering wheel is your constant interface with the car. I have seen competitive wheels sell at 2x this price point but I feel the quality of the Cipher wheel is right up there with any of the higher cost brands. This was a purchase I will never regret as my ride enjoyment has increased by a very large factor.
