This fire extinguisher kit is cheap insurance for your car - it could be the difference between stopping a bad situation before it gets worse or watching your car burn while you wait for emergency crews to reach you. But mounting one can be tricky. The Blackbird Fabworx bracket secures any standard 2.5 lb fire extinguisher in the area just ahead of the seat which is essentially unused space in the car and within arms reach when you need it.

ABC vs. HALON

ABC fire extinguishers are the most common type of extinguishing agent. Most extinguishers on standby at the corner stations at a race track will be ABC. The ABC dry chemical agent coats the surface and cuts off the connection from the fuel to the oxygen, which extinguishes the fire. It is non-conductive and is effective against Class A (ordinary combustibles like fabric and plastic), Class B (flammable liquids like gasoline and oil), and Class C (electrical fires). This makes it incredibly versatile for the varied fire risks present in a vehicle. Note that because this agent works by coating the source of the fire, that means it leaves behind a residue. But if soemthing is on fire, it's likely a bit of a mess anyways, and most would agree that they'd prefer to have some cleanup to do rather than see their car burn to the ground.

Halon 1211 is a pressurized liquid that is a non-conductive, oxygen robbing agent that leaves no residue as it turns to a gas at normal atmospheric pressure. Halon is the gold standard in fire suppression and it's the same stuff required by the FAA on all commercial airlines.
Because it does not leave a residue, cleanup is limited to whatever mess the fire caused, but there is nothing from the extinguisher to clean. Halon is also extremely quick acting, interrupting the chemical reaction of combustion, often meaning it extinguishes faster than ABC.

Bottom line, if you walk the pits at a race track and peek into cars to see who is using what, the majority will be ABC due to the price. And ABC certainly puts out a lot of fires every year. But if you want the best extinguishing speed and ability, Halon can't be beat.
