Stainless Steel PREMIUM ADJUSTABLE MX5 Miata Exhaust
Helmholtz Chamber Design Means Max Fun.
Just 14 pounds!
Gains 8hp in independent magazine tests!
PART NUMBER: 61-1787
WHY: Because YOU want to have fun!
HOW: Helmholtz Technology in a Miata Muffler for the First Time!
WHAT: A 2016+ Miata Muffler that you can control, aggressive throaty burble fun when you want with wide open throttle, and super mild when you want to just cruise.
This is a modified version of our all helmholtz Race muffler that adds an ultra efficient high density resonator before the tip to lower the volume while keeping the fun burble and playful character of our Race muffler. We also dress it up with a unique ultra light version of our 3.5 inch RoadsterSport rolled tip pictured below to finish the look for our street customers wanting something more luxuriously finished than the aggressively lightweight Race muffler. For theses reasons, this choice is designed and intended for max FUN on otherwise stock ND, the volume will overwhelm if you add a catless header.
Result is a 14 pound wonder of a street muffler, you get the great look of the RoadsterSport 3.5 rolled tip, the clean flow of 2.5 inches of pipe from start to finish with smooth mandrel bends on the shortest possible path from the midpipe to the exhaust cutout to max your horsepower gains...and minimal weight with these features. How much POWER? Grassroots MotorSports Magazine backed up our dyno results in the December 2016 issue, they tested and found peak gains of 8hp with no other mods, excerpt of that article below:

This muffler gives your right foot lots of control over the volume. The effect of the Helmholtz is very frequency specific such that under decel it can get mild and quiet, yet when you push hard toward redline it sounds exotic and racy. With the top down lots of fun throaty burble, but dramatically more tame when the top is up. In brief, FUN when you want it, and mild when just cruising.
How did we do it? We outfitted our 2016 with a computer and sound analyzer and microphones and drove it under varying conditions and loads with and without muffler. We then use that data and some special software to calculate the particulars of the Helmholtz chamber to precisely knock down the frequencies we do not want to hear in the car while allowing the good throaty burble fun sounds to pass through. All this in a muffler that is just 14 pounds, a nice savings over the 21 pound factory muffler.
Ride Along with our RoadsterSport Super Street in a Launch Edition owned by local customer Mark Booth below, big thanks to Mark for the great video!
SHIPPING NOTE...ships factory direct to you. All POLISHED stainless steel construction. Uses stock hangers and connects to either our RoadsterSport midpipe or the stock midpipe.
Proudly made in the USA, emissions legal in CA and every other State of the Union.
IF you have more than 20,000 miles add a fresh donut gasket, our item 61-2144 (factory part number RFK2-40-581). The factory designed the joint between muffler and midpipe as BOTH a flex joint and a sealing point and the impregnated graphite 'donut' gasket slowly grinds itself thinner and thinner. Those under 20k miles usually find the original still works great, those over about 20k miles usually best to start with fresh donut.
The SOUND level is Adjustable by YOU, INCLUDES removable cone baffle insert in the tip that helps YOU select final sound level, baffle in for reduced sound level, and baffle out for more sound...and just one bolt under the tip to make the easy change. Sold separate is an optional packed baffle that cuts the sound a little more if you want...but most won't!
Proudly made in the USA...with a LIFETIME WARRANY!
BRIAN'S APPLICATION NOTES: Famous Miata Racer Andy Hollis recently did his own dyno tests of this muffler and found it flowed as well as no muffler at all, with solid HP gains over the stock muffler, and he added: "BTW LOVE the sound!" Andy's dyno sheet reprinted on page 24 of our forum ND development thread and bottom of this page. Our Race and SuperStreet Twin Tip share the same straight pipe design with result they will make the same horsepower gains, but this is the customer top choice on sound when used without baffles. The little resonator just slightly civilizes the rowdy RoadsterSport Race, it's still very aggressive, with just a bit less high frequency notes in the balance than the pure Race.
Mild when cruising on otherwise stock ND, delivering a classic sports car BARK and THROATY RUMBLE when you wind it out to redline, lots of fun burble when just playing with the throttle around town. Result is TONS of fun, will make many of you laugh out loud. You also get the best performance from the straightest and cleanest flow out the exhaust cutout you can get, and much lower weight.
NOT for the faint of heart!!! The most common question we will get on this one is: "will it be too loud" and we cannot answer that one for you because the "right" sound level is a matter of entirely subjective personal preference. We can say our experience with thousands of customers has taught us that Automatic transmission owners prefer our bigger SuperQ muffler choices. If you think it normal to drive a Miata around town always in the 1000 to 2500 rpm range, lugging the motor as if a Miata is a diesel truck, we suggest that this is not your muffler. If you are not going to use the motor for the fun to be found from 3000 rpms through redline every week, we ask you please get one of our bigger choices like the RoadsterSport SuperQ. IF you visit redline often, this might be your muffler! We tune the helmholtz chamber for the range that most folks cruise down the freeway in the car, knocking down over 40 db at peak drone in the 120 to 130 hertz range between 2700 and 3200 rpms. Without the helmholtz chamber the major drone peak is 2700 to 3200 rpms with a pure straight pipe. The goal was straight pipe performance reasonably tamed with minimum weight so it can be enjoyed in a daily driver that might go SCCA race on the weekends.
Not designed for use on car with aftermarket header or aftermarket midpipe, designed for max fun on otherwise stock exhaust system. Adding header adds a massive amount of sound, thus we suggest customers considering adding a header should look to our SuperQ choices for best control of results with header change. The issue with using adjustable length midpipe with this ultra light three hanger design is that customers rarely get the adjustable length set correct and that can put too much stress on the connection between helmholtz chamber and straight pipe. So if you insist on adding midpipe with this design be careful to get length of midpipe accurate (hangers aligned nicely straight up and down for midpipe) and use thicker hanger from the rear to better support the bigger midpipe.

BRIAN'S INSTALL NOTES:
Installation of this Miata exhaust is SUPER EASY...just two 14mm bolts! I do this install at home in my driveway with NO jacking up of the car and it takes me just 5 minutes total. The key to making it easy is get the exhaust hanger removal tool from home depot or Amazon (costs just ten bucks last I checked on Amazon and well worth every penny!). You then need a 14mm and 13mm socket and one ratchet, plus some spray soap or minute wax or even just a dab of dish soap to lube the metal exhaust hanging rods where they pass through the rubber hangers on the car. If you are prepared, it might take you 15 to 20 minutes the first time, just 5 minutes for me because I have done it a few hundred times. Put a soft piece of cardboard on the ground or a thick old towel for some padding.
When you open the big box you will find separate foam wrap on the exhaust tip, leave that foam around the tip during your install to protect the polished tips and your car's soft plastic in the exhaust cutout. Use gloves. Note the 'bolts' from the factory are actually studs with springs and nuts and the factory usually jams the nuts on so hard that unbolting it will bring the stud out too. If that does not happen then use 13mm long socket to unscrew the studs (or use jam nut technique where both nuts are put on one stud against each other and then wrench used on the inner of the two to back out the stud). Then lube up the stock exhaust hangers with dish soap and yank stock muffler back and forth to work the soap into the rubber hangers and then the muffler will slide off those rubber hangers easily. Then hang the new muffler on the wet and soapy rubber hangers and torque 'bolts' with the springs back in place to 30ft/lbs. Now you can remove foam tip wrap. Option to remove the baffle too, to do so loosen bolt that holds it from under the exhaust tip and use it as handle to shake the baffle loose and then unscrew bolt the rest of the way and pull the baffle (pulling baffle raises the sound slightly). IF not removing baffle, check torque, 15 ft/lbs on the retaining nut will be enough thanks to lock washer included. Note the muffler to midpipe joint is a ball socket connection for the first time on a Miata, it is designed to move a lot, so please do not add sealants that will gum up that dry ball socket joint. Our pipe size is bigger than OEM for best performance/flow, that means the stock donut gasket sinks a bit deeper than with factory muffler 'mouth'. Our flange is designed as a dual purpose item that allows going to flat gasket if you later go with our 2.5 inch midpipe, at which point the midpipe has a flex joint to replace function of the donut and you get a clean 2.5 inches of flow all the way, which is not possible if we stay same small pipe of stock muffler. After install hold you hands about 2 inches from gasket connection with car running to check if you feel 'puff puff puff' indication of leak against your hands, if you do check your install or replace the factory gasket (our item 61-2144, factory part number RFK2-40-581 )

Love! Love! Love it!! Sounds amazing, and most importantly, doesn't sound like a "fart pipe"! Can't wait to get it on the track. Super easy install, to a few minutes and fit perfectly! If you're thinking about buying it, don't wait, you'll love it. Thanks Good-win racing for a great product!
Love my new RoadsterSport SuperStreet Single Tip Exhaust. To me, this is how it should come from the factory. Low rumble when idling and nice growl when you get on it. Not obnoxious at all. Makes an already fun car even more fun to drive.
I'm very critical with exhausts. It needs to have the right tone, not drone, not be annoying on the highway, not have a ridiculous cold start, etc. The SuperStreet Single Tip is the right move for the ND Miata.
If you're deciding between the Super-Q and the SuperStreet, get the SuperStreet! I tried both. I was not a fan of the Super-Q. It was loud in the wrong ways (boomy on low rpm, not much up top) while the SuperStreet Single Tip is loud in the right ways! The SuperStreet still has some low rpm boom on deceleration, but offers much more in other situations/rpms. With the included baffle in, I would argue it's about the same loudness as the Super-Q. I keep the baffle out.
Everyone is different but here are my answers to typical questions on an exhaust like this:
- Does it drone? No, not at all.
- Is it too loud? I don't think so. I don't find it over the top.
- Does it give you a headache? Nope, I'm sensitive to that too.
- Is the cold start too loud? It's loud but I've had cars in the past that were much louder with longer cold starts. I don't feel like I'm gonna wake the whole house or my neighbors with this one.
- Does it 'sound good'/have the right tone? I don't think you'll get much better out of this engine. It'll never sound like a flat 6. It won't make your jaw drop, but it will put a smile on your face.
Super easy install, and beautiful look. I was on the fence between a Q line of exhaust or this exhaust, as I was worried about it being too loud. In the RF I can confidently say with the top up it is extremely mild when you want it to be, and still fun to rev out when you're driving like you mean it. The start up sound is amazing, and mellows out when cruising to pass the significant other test of approval. If you're on the fence, go for this one. I also do not have the included baffle in, I think it's perfect without it.
Initially, I was set on a dual-tip setup for the aesthetics, but after diving into Brian's notes on the GWR site, I pivoted to the SuperStreet Single Tip (SSST). I'm so glad I did. My biggest gripe with the stock setup was that I could only hear the engine; the exhaust was essentially nonexistent. I considered active mufflers, but they felt like too much cost and complexity for what I wanted.
Two months in, my opinion hasn't budged: this is the perfect volume. It took a moment to adjust to a car that actually makes noise, but the sound is elegant and beautiful. It's turned my daily commute into a "little symphony" that actually changed the way I drive, I'm constantly playing with the throttle now just to hear it sing.
I've kept the baffle out from day one. There is some drone, but it's easily managed by staying in the right gear/RPM range. The chrome finish is stunning; while it's an extra chore to keep it polished during car washes, the look is absolutely worth the effort. GWR has created a functional piece of art here. I'm a fan for life!
Prior owner had installed the single tip Race muffler, which was a bit loud for me. I decided to replace it with the single tip SuperStreet which is much better to my ears. Getting the old muffler off was a bit of a bear, though some WD40 on the flange bolts and a torque wrench eventually did the trick. Some hand soap on the rubber hangers helped a lot as well. About an hour to get the old one off, literally 10 minutes to put the new one on.
Installed the Goodwin Racing RoadsterSport SuperStreet Single Tip on my 2020 ND RF Club today and I'm already sold. Bought this exhaust based on a recommendation from one of my track friends. I put about 50 miles on it right after the install and it completely changed the character of the car in the best way.
The sound is exactly what I was hoping for: deep and sporty without being obnoxious. There's basically no drone (at least none that I can notice), which is huge for a daily driver. Under load it has a nice, rich tone, and up top it gets a light raspiness in the 5,000 to 7,500 rpm range that makes the car feel alive without turning it into a riced out Civic tin can.
One of my favorite differences is how much easier it is to hear the engine on downshifts now. Rev matching feels more natural when you can actually hear what the motor is doing, and it's made my shifts smoother and more consistent.
I was stuck choosing between the Race exhaust and this one. I'm sure I'd have fun with the extra volume of the Race, but for day to day driving I feel this is the sweet spot. Decided on the baffle removed but will be a nice option to have for a roadtrip. It finally sounds like the true sports car it already is, just without the downsides that usually come with a louder setup.
If you want a deeper, more aggressive tone with minimal drone and daily drivability intact, this exhaust delivers.
Very easy installation. Sounds great- I am using the included baffle (so neighbors won't complain) and I think it's close to perfect. The Miata already makes me smile, this exhaust amplifies that. It now sounds more like a sports car.
This is exactly what I wanted. It sounds great under acceleration and without any annoying drone when cruising. Installed in about 10 minutes on a lift. It looks great too with an expensive looking tip.
I watched the videos long enough to have to have one of these. Does make one giggle! And does attract attention! Too much fun! I'm falling in love with my Miata again.
AUTOMATIC OWNERS: THIS IS THE ONE!
I ignored the suggestion that this wouldn't be ideal for use with an automatic, and I couldn't be happier. If anything, I was expecting it to be louder. I was worried about drone or boominess, but there isn't any of that.
Cold starts are civil, even if you live in a condo next to people that you like.
Commuting is a breeze, you'll hear it, but nothing louder than the road or wind noise.
ABSOLUTELY HOWLS above 4k RPMs, sounds better than any video you'll find online, with plenty of burbling, growling goodness.
Took 30 minutes to remove the old one, put on without an exhaust hangar tool, using a 14mm wrench and some love taps with a hammer to start the studs loose, no floor jack required. If I can fit under there, anybody can.
Just installed the SuperStreet and wow, it absolutely brings the car to life! I pulled the baffle out before I installed it so I can't say how it sounds with it but without it sounds great! Definitely makes you chuckle out loud. I highly recommend this over the stock exhaust.
This muffler sounds TOTALLY BITCHIN!!! Thank you so much for making and selling a killer product!
This exhaust has been nothing but a joy, and it's absolutely worth it. The stock exhaust on the ND was very quiet and very stock sounding. It didn't sound like a sports car. So I went looking for a muffler as my first mod, with the goal of finding something that was either quiet or loud depending on what I wanted.
The Goodwin Street Single came up as a great solution to that problem, and I've been nothing but impressed. It's added a whole new dimension to how the Miata feels to drive by being able to hear the engine with such a nice tone. Under 1500RPM and during idle (after warming up) it's very quiet, almost unnoticeable. You can cruise around in traffic without even noticing it. But as soon as you put a little gas in, the engine sings. It's not as loud as most other tuned cars you'll come across, but it's more than enough to have a ton of fun. I never wanted to be that guy you could hear across the city anyways.
There's also no drone at all, and no raspy-ness. Just smooth, exciting sound. A sound that makes the car seem much more exotic than it actually is. The only hum is a bassy reverb from 1500-1700RPM, but the car easily cruises around under that. (I have an automatic).
Overall, as a first mod, this muffler added a whole new level of experience to the ride without sacrificing daily drive-ability, and while staying extremely tasteful, both in sound and appearance. Highly recommended.
Most of you are probably wondering how loud this is. Watching a youtube video can't really answer this question. If OEM is 1, annoying Harley is 10, this exhaust is about a 5. Your neighbors will hear you, but I don't think they will be mad.
This exhaust will drastically increase the fun factor of your car. Cancel your therapy appointments and get this!
This is the 2nd RoadsterSport SuperStreet I've installed. Had one on my 2019 ND2 and loved it so much, I ordered this the first weekend after I picked up my new 2025 ND3.
Installation is super easy. Took me about 45 minutes....but 15 minutes of that was cussing out the rubber hangers (PITA getting the stock muffler off of them if all you have is a channel-lock pliers). Getting the new muffler installed on the hangers was easy with a little Dawn dishwashing liquid.
I was also concerned about the flanges not touching until I read in the reviews that they're not supposed to touch. Reused the factory donut since I only had 2,000 miles on the car.
As far as sound, I removed the insert straightaway (no, I'm not British) but I do find it a bit too raspy for my liking. Probably give it a few weeks to 'break-in" and see if it tones down a bit. If not, I might throw the insert back in. I can say it's not "droney" at all, just as advertised.
Great addition to a Miata and makes it sound like a proper sports car.
Great muffler, and highly recommended. Installation was ridiculously easy and fitment was spot-on. The exhaust has a little bark on startup, but quickly settles down at idle. I haven't noticed any kind of drone at all, and at cruising speeds, you can barely hear it. When the driving gets spirited, the sound levels come up but not too loud at all. The sound quality is perfect as well. This is on my daily driver car, and couldn't be happier.
The Miata sounds like a proper sports car now. Do yourself a favor and buy one. It's a bit loud on start-up but calms down as soon as you get started. If you want to be quiet just keep the revs down. I find the sound enjoyable and easy to live with. The car is even more fun to drive now.
Easy installation and nice exhaust note, makes the car come alive.
Was looking for an exhaust update for my new MX5. Liked the description of the stainless with helmholz resonator with the removable baffle. Also was happy that the pipe ID was the same as the mid pipe making it non-constrictive, with dyno testing showing an 8 hp boost. The install was very straightforward and quick. Soaping up the hanger pins and working the stock pins out of the hangers with my arthritic fingers got a boost from using a wide open channel lock plier with a protective rag in the jaws to just get the rubber over the raised ridge on the pin ends and then they slipped off easily from there. I am delighted with the improvement in exhaust note over stock. Haven't pulled the baffle out yet as I'm quite happy with the volume improvement. Much improved rasp and burble when winding her up over the stock sound. Highly recommended!
