Brian's Application Notes: Our dyno work with and without any filter in the factory airbox found no gains on ND1 Generation Miata. And our dyno work with several brands of intakes on ND1 generation found zero power gains with any of the complete intake choices. ND2 generation Miata has quite a bit better breathing at the top end, so we cannot say at this time that there are no gains with ND2. Nonetheless, at this time our opinion is that these choices are likely giving you only a washable filter, not a performance gain. We will seek to repeat some of our tests on our 2019 as time permits.

K&N Panel Filter
Good build quality. 2 clips to lift up plastic cover, take out old filter, and just slide this new filter in. Can't really attest to any hp increase or even sound change, But good replacement if you want/need a new filter. K&N always does it right

Easy to install it, no tools needed.
All the old timer auto cross and track drivers I know brought this air filter to my attention. Performance enhancement opinions vary but all agree it's the best box air filter available and just about maintenance free. Never replace your air filter again is a feature I couldn't resist. Recommend.
This is the way to go, rather than wasting time and money on a cold-air-intake. Knowledgeable folks know that a drop-in filter like this is actually the best choice for a ND Miata, and extremely easy to do.
Cheapest 5-8hp you can get. You will be sacraficing your filtration for more air. I only have the drop-in for canyon run and track day. Installation is literally like it says, drop in.
