DESCRIPTION
The TDR Heat Shield was designed to help keep your under hood temperatures in check. It is manufactured using heavy-grade industrial aluminum to reflect radiant heat and to balance the conducted heat across its surface. Insulation is 2000 degree rated ceramic wool that helps maintain its shape as you form the TDR Heat Shield around the exhaust manifold or header. The outer surface is an aluminized fiberglass mat that not only looks good, but also adds to the efficiency by dissipating heat, resulting in lower surface temperatures.
Why the Heat Shield is a better option over header wrap: Cool air needs to be around the header, and insulating it with a wrap to hold exhaust heat in makes the header material surface temperatures reach near molten levels. When you wrap the header you trap the heat in the header, but also suffocate the material that needs to breathe to dissipate heat for its own survival. Most header manufacturers will NOT WARRANTY a header which has had a wrap installed on it. We also know that headers have been destroyed after running headers wraps, and these headers were on perfectly tuned engines. If you want a true thermal barrier that will reduce under hood temperatures without damaging your header or voiding its warranty, the TDR Insulated Heat Shield is the obvious choice instead of header wrap.
Works with factory manifolds and all aftermarket headers for all Miatas and MX-5s and is a must for supercharger applications. Creative customers have also used these insulated heat shields on everything from Honda Civics to V8 powered race cars.
Shown below on NA/NB Generation Miata but install looks about the same on the ND generation MX5 Miata.

Miata Header Heatshield Blanket
Does the job really well. When I put on an aftermarket header, I wanted to keep the heat in control. This blanket seems to do the job pretty well and it's already pre-cut and formed so all you have to do is bolt it in and poke it (yes, poke it) from under the car to let it try to get as much space as it can. The instructions say it becomes more efficient the more room it has from the header, hence the broomstick pokes.
Beautifully made and crafted. Excellent advice from Goodwin Tech/ Sales guy's advice in purchase and installation. Engine bay runs much cooler and preserves aging of rubber, plastic etc prematurely and help keeps coolant and intake hoses cooler.
I do miss seeing my ceramic coated 4-2-1 header but glad I installed this TrackDog heat blanket/shield!
Purchased this along with the ceramic header.
The downside: it hides the beautiful ceramic header.
The upside: it's better than stock insulation and helps keep the heat from going up into the engine bay.
Very nice, thick, but flexible, product. Easy enough to conform to the general shape of the header and it goes down much lower than stock. Included brackets have alternate ways of mounting for stock vs. aftermarket header and make it very easy to install, especially if you're doing the entire header swap and the bolts are all off already.
Bonus: it comes with a sheet listing the torque specs for header nuts, which was better than the actual headers, which don't include any directions. I had the info lined up prior to the header install, but was pleasantly surprised to see the sheet in this box.
I don't know why, but in a completely absurd way I was bothered by the $20 shipping cost on this $120 item. GWR pointed out that it's bulky and that's what UPS/Fedex charge. I also realize that the exhaust system components are much more expensive, so after spending close to $2k of the major components, $20 is a joke, and yet, still, somehow this really annoyed me, so be prepared!
